In 1771, at the age of 25, Jonathan married the 19 year old Abigail Eggleston. Jonathan and Abigail were both born in at Wintonbury, CT.

Jonathan was drafted from Wintonbury, CT during the Revolutionary War and served during 1776 at New York City and Westchester County, New York. In 1777, he was in Colonel McClellan's Regiment and was seriously wounded in action, but eventually recovered.
